CBD is one of more than 80 different chemical compounds called "cannabinoids" that are extracted from the cannabis plant (marijuana). Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), perhaps the best-known cannabinoid, CBD is not psychoactive.

In contrast, CBD shares a major metabolic pathway with a class of drugs called NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen and Rimadyl. This pathway controls many processes in the body, from inflammatory reactions to blood clotting.

Why Use CBD For Dogs?

CBD is often cited as a useful therapy for a variety of conditions, including pain management, arthritis, anxiety, seizures, and even cancer. Although the use of CBD in treating each of these conditions has been poorly researched, the scientific evidence varies for each scenario.

Arthritis:

Since CBD shares a metabolic pathway with anti-inflammatory drugs, it makes sense to help with certain inflammatory conditions. Osteoarthritis, often abbreviated as arthritis, is one of the most common inflammatory diseases in dogs.

Studies show that CBD can provide significant pain relief in dogs with arthritis when administered in appropriate doses twice daily.

Seizure:

Seizures may be the most studied use of CBD in humans, but there is limited research on pets. In dogs, seizures can be caused by a variety of underlying conditions.

Regarding idiopathic epilepsy, in particular, there is some research showing that CBD may help reduce the frequency of seizures in these dogs. However, this benefit was only seen in dogs concurrently with traditional seizure medications.
